What is The Good Christian Girl Identity?
The Good Christian Girl Identity is a fragmented subconscious identity structure in women, internally created as a protective response to love, belonging and acceptance being conditional on their performance in fitting into a specific religious, familial, societal mould.
When her very existence is conditional, of course a perfectionistic mask feels safer.
This isn’t merely behaviour girls and women perform. The identity mistakes performance and perfection for faith, and the traumatic quality of this identity creates significant identity fragmentation, distorting these 5 key areas: how a woman sees herself, God, others, community and her potential. (As identified and seen in Leah Samara’s Soul Synthesis Framework image below)
This is why changing behaviour and working “harder” doesn’t work to stop a former Good Christian Girl self-abandoning through performance, perfection, people pleasing and proving themselves; or trying to be more fully authentic self.
It’s also why trying harder doesn’t tend to lead to lasting results for the former Good Christian Girl – not because she’s doing something wrong – but because she needs to address the right identity at the right level, and embody her Spiritually Wealthy Identity™. What are the symptoms of this identity?
A woman can carry the Good Christian Girl Identity for decades without realising she has it. She just knows something is wrong.
She’s often exhausted. Disconnected from herself. Constantly trying to get it right. She struggles to know what she actually wants, needs, thinks or feels, and can’t understand why she keeps abandoning herself, even when she desperately wants to stop.
The symptoms can show up in every realm of her life, relationships and business:

Her worth becomes conditional. She learns that being a “good” Christian woman means serving, pleasing, performing and meeting impossible standards – while her own needs, desires, personality and imperfections become things she has to stifle and suppress.

Her authentic voice gets buried. She learns to distrust herself, defer to others and avoids everything that could possibly make her look rebellious, selfish, difficult or “ungodly.” Her God-given voice, intuition and discernment – become things she learns to override.

She becomes highly functional but deeply depleted. She can build, lead, achieve and carry enormous responsibility – while feeling burnt-out and the constant pressure to prove herself. Somewhere underneath it all is a woman who wants to live more unapologetically, stop performing and pretzelling herself into a shape other people will approve of.

She feels like she “loses herself” often – in her relationships, marketing, communities. After years of adapting, pleasing and performing, she automatically becomes who she needs to be to be loved, accepted and “good” – while abandoning who she is in the process (and then hating herself for it).

Her relationship with God becomes complicated. She may deeply love God while feeling distant, spiritually dry, disillusioned or confused about what is actually God vs religious, familial or societal programming. Eventually, this can become a faith crisis or lead to faith deconstruction.
She doesn’t necessarily want to leave God.
She wants to know Him without losing herself in the process.
She wants to stop abandoning herself to be good.
She wants to become fully alive, fully herself and unapologetically who God created her to be.
How does the Good Christian Girl Identity differ from Christlike Christianity?
Understanding the Good Christian Girl Identity is not fighting against God, scripture or his unique design for women – it’s advocating for it. It’s recalibrating us back to it. It’s stepping away from what has become distorted – the religious, familial and societal expectations, traditions that have formed doctrine over time – and choosing to allow God to rewire and rewrite over them with his truth.
If, as Leonard Ravenhill reportedly said “Jesus did not come into the world to make bad men good. He came into the world to make dead men live!” – then why are we still trying to make girls and women good?
When we hear “deny yourself” we have to understand that the God who created The Self is not advocating for the erasure The Self. He is advocating for the surrender of the parts of us that he never intended for us to become entwined with – such as The Ego.
Here we must face the deeper questions around the difference between self-denial like Christ verses the self-erasure that woman are often taught is holy. The unholy disappearance. It is evil and it’s not from God.

Self-abandonment is never holy – and it should always be distinguishable from faithfulness to Christ. Self-abandonment can easily be discerned by the presence of what Leah Samara refers to as “The 6 P’s of Self-Abandonment” – perfectionism, people-pleasing, proving, performing, pretzelling and pushing.
The goal is to be free to be who God designed us as women to be. To be free to discern and follow God without confusing human expectations with His voice. To be free to use our God-given voice and intuition – an incredible form of protection for ourselves and others. And soak deeply in God-given significance and worth.. without having to earn it first.
